The Fores Project Residency

22 May - 30 June 2023

The Fores Project, London

Yulia Iosilzon's paintings are whimsical, their thin silk surface creates a stained-glass effect, the colour faintly luminescent in passing light. The subjects appear ethereal in this glow, smooth pearlescent faces caught in a flurry of movement. The works hark back to nostalgic illustrations and 70's children's cartoons as figures shift between human, plant and abstract mark.

To Iosilzon, fantasy presents itself as a world of escape. Each work acts as a frame from an imagined world built by the artist. Narratives are written across a series of paintings, creating Iosilzon's own mythologies, and drawing on pre-existing ones. Fairy tales, like Iosilzon’s paintings, may appear fanciful on the surface but delve deeper into morality, and the trials and tribulations of everyday life.

Fiction makes reality palatable and the artist's paintings reflect on this, transporting the everyday into another world. Cultural references: Jewish iconography and children's stories, plant the work between reality and fantasy. The artist uses the works to pick apart her own emotions, experiences, and thoughts, allowing fantasy to take over and twist them into stories.

The Fores Project is a residency programme in Kentish Town, North London. Based in a Victorian-era town house, the residency offers a quintessentially London experience, with accommodation and studio access onsite.

At The Fores Project, we pride ourselves on curating each residency for the artist’s specific practice and needs, giving them time and space to further their practice whilst immersed in the culture and history of the city.

During their time on The Fores Project, there will be the opportunity for artists to connect with collectors, curators, and gallerists alike via studio visits and an end-of-residency event.
